best relaxing beaches in santa cruz

A beach day in the Galápagos is unlike anything else on earth. Not only can you frolic in the surf, but you’ll likely also find yourself spending time with exotic residents like sea turtles, blue-footed boobies, iguanas, and friendly sea lions.

Isla Santa Cruz, one of the archipelago’s most famous volcanic islands, is home to a wide variety of wildlife, and some of the best beaches on Santa Cruz Island rival any coastline in the Pacific. We’ve compiled a list of the five best stretches of sand, where you can mix leisure with wildlife spotting and active adventures like snorkeling and diving.

1. Playa la Estación

Located on the south side of Santa Cruz near the main town of Puerto Ayora is a small, enchanting beach radiating timeless allure. It’s located on a path leading to the esteemed Charles Darwin Station (the Galápagos premier biological research center) and features fine views back across the bay to town.

The golden sands of Playa de la Estación are a great place to relax and enjoy some sunbathing. Local iguanas and sea lions have the same idea, and closer to the water, Sally Lightfoot crabs scurry around volcanic rocks. It’s also a nice spot to do some snorkeling. Swimming along the shore reveals a menagerie of underwater creatures, like tropical fish, rays, sea turtles, harmless reef sharks, and more.

2. Playa El Garrapatero

Although Garrapatero Beach requires a bit more effort to reach, its seclusion makes it well worth the journey. A 40-minute taxi ride northeast from Puerto Ayora leads to this remote and unspoiled treasure. Nestled near the Santa Cruz highlands, you can easily pair a visit here with excursions to nearby highlights. These include Rancho Primicias, a giant tortoise reserve, and the adjacent Lava Tunnels, underground caverns that run 1 km in length.

Once you set foot on Garrapatero, prepare to be enchanted by the wide open sands running up to turquoise and aquamarine waters. Volcanic rocks in the surf create tidepools, making this an ideal snorkeling site. Take a dip, and you’ll more than likely find yourself swimming alongside graceful sea turtles.

Which Beaches on Santa Cruz Island Are Best for Families?

Wout family journey through Santa Cruz Island, featuring Puerto Ayora, wildlife encounters, and the island’s natural highlights

Santa Cruz is home to the Galápagos’ best family beaches, and Playa de los Alemanes is the clear first choice. The calm, shallow waters are hemmed in by mangrove forests that act as a natural breakwater, so toddlers and younger children can wade safely while parents relax on the sand. A 5-minute water taxi from Puerto Ayora’s main dock drops you on the opposite side of Academy Bay, and from there it’s a short walk past the Finch Bay Hotel.

Standup paddleboarding gear is available to rent, and the snorkeling just offshore is gentle enough for older kids with basic experience. Tortuga Bay’s inner lagoon, Playa Mansa, is another strong family option, with no current and kayak rentals right on the sand.

For families staying several days on Santa Cruz, alternating between these two beaches gives children a mix of calm wading and light adventure without needing a naturalist guide.

3. Playa de los Alemanes

Besides Playa de la Estación, another quiet beach perfect for travelers with kids is Playa de los Alemanes. Located just south of Puerto Ayora, the beach is accessible via a brisk 5-minute water taxi ride from the main dock to the opposite side of the bay. From there, it’s a leisurely stroll past the luxurious Finch Bay Hotel to this idyllic coastal gem.

The calm waters at Playa de los Alemanes are hemmed in by mangrove forests, creating the perfect spot for little ones to splash around in the gentle surf. It’s a great area for sandcastle building, sunbathing, and standup paddleboarding (SUP); and if you venture further out into the crystalline waters, the snorkeling conditions are excellent. Expect to see schools of colorful tropical fish darting among the coral formations

Also, a short walk from the beach is Las Grietas, a geological wonder and natural swimming hole lined with towering lava cliffs.

4. Tortuga Bay

If you’re up for a longer excursion, it’s a scenic 45-minute walk south from Puerto Ayora on a cacti-lined trail to Tortuga Bay. This is one of the true gems of the Galápagos Islands: a long white sand beach fronting clear waters that change various shades of blue the further you get from shore.

Upon arrival at this serene oasis (also great for families), you’re treated to the sight of sunbathing iguanas and the sounds of surf lapping gently at the shore. It’s the perfect place to enjoy ultimate relaxation and communing with nature. Equally enjoyable is to rent a kayak and explore the coastline.

Can You Snorkel at the Beaches on Santa Cruz?

Snorkeling in Santa Cruz is possible at every beach on this list, though conditions and marine life vary considerably. Playa de la Estación, the closest to Puerto Ayora, is one of the easiest entry points. Wade in from the sand, and within minutes you can spot green sea turtles, white-tip reef sharks, and schools of king angelfish drifting along the rocky shore.

Garrapatero’s volcanic tidepools shelter seahorses and spotted eagle rays in the shallows, while Las Bachas is best for surface snorkeling over a sandy bottom where juvenile turtles feed.

For more advanced underwater exploration, pairing a beach day with a dedicated snorkeling or diving excursion at sites like Kicker Rock or Los Túneles will round out the experience. No personal equipment is required; most guided day trips include masks, fins, and wetsuits.

5. Las Bachas Beach

Travel to the windswept northern coast of Santa Cruz, near Isla Baltra, and you’ll find Playa Las Bachas, one of the stand-out beaches in all of the Galápagos Islands. It’s a popular nesting spot for Galápagos green sea turtles, and you might see hatchlings if you come during Mar-Dec. And if you embark on a snorkeling tour, you could find yourself swimming alongside these turtles in Bachas’ shallow waters around nearby lava rocks.

Another highlight here is the remains of American WWII-era barges, which are visible from the shore. Birders will love spotting shorebirds like oystercatchers and blue-footed boobies, and the brackish lagoons behind the beach are teeming with flamingos.
