María Andrea Castillo: A Guiding Light in Ecuadorian Tourism
Cuenca-born María Andrea, a national guide and tour leader, inspires our Operations Supervisor, Karina Olivo. Passionate about sharing Ecuador’s beauty, María Andrea’s tourism career began with studies in Cuenca and an internship in the Galapagos, where she fell in love with both the islands and her future husband. Raising her daughters there while working in tourism, she faced a career setback during the pandemic. Returning to Quito, she revalidated her credentials, earned her National Tour Guide certification, and rebuilt her career.
María Andrea and Kari have collaborated on countless once-in-a-lifetime trips!
For the past two years, she’s freelanced for top companies, including Rebecca Adventure Travel, promoting sustainable tourism and conservation while showcasing Ecuador’s heritage, from the Galapagos to Cuenca and Quito. On a personal level, María Andrea’s support goes beyond her role as a guide. When a colleague faced a serious illness, she stepped in without hesitation, ensuring operations ran smoothly and taking the initiative to train new staff.
Her leadership, kindness, and unwavering support reflect the very essence of women inspiring women in the travel industry. Her story is a testament to the power of community, resilience, and the incredible impact that women have in shaping the world of travel. She embodies our Travel With Purpose philosophy, which we share through our Huella Positiva (Positive Footprint) initiative, showing travelers how their contributions improve local communities.

As a marine biologist, oceanographer, and advocate, Dr. Earle has spent her life breaking barriers in marine research and conservation, proving that passion and persistence can lead to real change. Her work is particularly impactful in the Galápagos Islands, a place she has studied and fiercely advocated for decades. Even at 89 years old, she continues to dive into these waters, witnessing firsthand the transformations taking place beneath the surface. Her latest visit, just months ago, is a testament to her enduring commitment to ocean conservation.
Dr. Sylvia Earle is a legend! And Charli’s personal hero.
A Woman Without Limits
Dr. Earle’s career is filled with historical firsts. She became the first female Chief Scientist of NOAA, the highest-ranking scientific position in the U.S. ocean agency. She also led the first all-female aquanaut mission, spending two weeks living underwater to conduct groundbreaking marine research. Through her Mission Blue initiative, she has created a global network of marine protected areas, known as “Hope Spots”, safeguarding critical ecosystems from destruction. Her contributions to ocean conservation have earned her the title of “Her Deepness”, a recognition by TIME Magazine that reflects her unmatched influence in the world of marine science.
A True Inspiration for Travel with Purpose
Dr. Sylvia Earle’s relentless advocacy, scientific brilliance, and deep respect for the ocean make her an inspiration not only for women in science but for anyone who believes in Travel with Purpose. She reminds us that age, gender, and societal expectations should never limit our potential. For Charli, Dr. Earle goes beyond being a marine biologist. She is a role model, a pioneer, and a woman who has dedicated her life to making the world a better place. One day, she hopes to meet her in person and witness her unwavering passion for protecting our blue planet firsthand.

Dreaming Beyond Limits
Despite growing up in an area with limited opportunities, Lidia’s ambition is persistent. She dreams of becoming a soldier, a goal that reflects her strength and unshakable resolve. At the same time, she has already taken her first steps toward financial independence, crafting and selling hand-sewn keychains, a skill she learned from her family. Leticia: Cultivating Sustainability and Strength in Colombian Coffee Farming
For Rebecca Braak, our Founder and CEO, Leticia is a woman who embodies both strength and sustainability. In Envigado, Colombia, Leticia owns and operates Observatorio Agroecológico El Cafetal, the only certified organic coffee farm in the area. Through her commitment to sustainable agriculture, she has not only built a thriving business but has also created a better future for her family, ensuring that her three children receive an education and that their livelihoods remain secure.
Rebecca feels blessed to have met Leticia.
A Lesson in Sustainability and Innovation
During a 2024 visit to Leticia’s farm, Rebecca and Katie experienced firsthand how organic coffee production is possible without the use of chemicals. Leticia taught them that certain plants, like tobacco, can serve as natural pesticides, demonstrating how nature itself provides solutions when treated with respect. Leticia’s farm operates with a deep understanding of ecological balance, using traditional methods to take coffee from bean to cup while working with the environment instead of against it. With just two hectares of land, she proves that sustainability is not about size but about approach and dedication.
Strength Wrapped in Kindness
What inspired Rebecca most was Leticia’s quiet yet undeniable strength. She is a woman who has built something meaningful through hard work and knowledge, showing that impact starts at a local level.
