Flying to the Galapagos with Toddlers: What Parents Should Know

  • You won’t receive any drinks or food during your flight, so ensure you pack enough. Additionally, food and drinks are usually available for purchase. However, they may sell out, like when my daughter wanted a sandwich.
  • Furthermore, it’s important to note that all flights from Quito to Galapagos have a stop in Guayaquil. This stop is necessary for refueling and allows for the boarding and disembarking of passengers. During refueling, do not use the restrooms, and switch off all electrical devices. Fortunately, we brought a book, but it can still be challenging to keep your child entertained for the 45-minute duration.
  • Book first-row seats (if possible). These places have lots of playing & sleeping spaces for the kids.
  • Lastly, there is a one-hour time difference between the mainland and the Galapagos Islands. Be sure to consider this when planning your trip.

How to Plan a Stress-Free Galapagos Trip with Toddlers

  • Choose a family-friendly tour: When choosing day trips, pick one made for families with young children.
  • Remember, infants and toddlers have a short attention span. Plan many short activities during the day. Try kayaking, walking, visiting the research center, swimming, or playing at the beach.
  • Transportation plan: Note that getting around the islands may mean walking on uneven ground. You may also take small boats between islands. Plan accordingly by bringing a sturdy stroller or carrier that can handle these conditions.
  • Pack well: Bring the key items your toddler will need for the trip. Pack sunscreen, insect repellent, hats, snacks, toys, water bottles, and a baby carrier.
  • The Galapagos Islands are a protected natural area. Strict rules help preserve its unique ecosystem. Make sure you and your toddler follow these rules, such as staying on designated paths and not touching any wildlife.

Our Recommended Toddler Itinerary for Galápagos

For families traveling to the Galapagos with toddlers, starting on San Cristobal Island is a smart choice. After a long travel day, little ones often need time to move and play. The airport is just five minutes from the main village.

Transfers are quick and stress-free. Families can settle in fast and enjoy beach time. They can also enjoy a relaxed afternoon almost right away.

Day 1

Arrive on San Cristobal Island and ease into the Galapagos rhythm. Spend the afternoon exploring village playgrounds.

Watch sea lions on the waterfront. Swim at Playa Mann or Playa de Oro. Families can also join a light organized activity, depending on energy levels after travel.

Day 2

Enjoy a boat excursion to Kicker Rock. The navigation is smooth and fun for children.

It stops at Playa Grande, a beautiful white sand beach. Perfect for swimming, short walks, and seeing wildlife. Continue to Kicker Rock for snorkeling in calm waters, followed by lunch served onboard.

Day 3

Start the morning kayaking in the harbor, often sharing the water with playful sea lions. After lunch, take a short 40-minute flight to Isabela Island. Spend the afternoon relaxing on long sandy beaches, spotting flamingos in nearby lagoons, and watching penguins near the harbor. Enjoy a sunset walk and fresh seafood in the village.

Day 4

Explore Isabela Island at a relaxed pace. Visit Flamingo Lagoon and the giant tortoise breeding center, or bike to the historic Wall of Tears. Snorkel at Concha de Perla or look for penguins near the dock. The Sierra Negra volcano excursion involves long drives and hikes and may not be ideal for toddlers.

Day 5

Join a Los Tuneles snorkeling tour, one of the highlights of Isabela. The calm waters around the lava formations make snorkeling easier, with frequent sightings of marine life, including sharks. They provide a light snack during the excursion.

Day 6

Take an early morning ferry to Santa Cruz Island for calmer seas during the 2.5-hour journey. Upon arrival in Puerto Ayora, explore the town. Visit the fish market and the Charles Darwin Research Station. Then walk to Tortuga Bay.

Day 7

Choose a day trip to nearby islands such as Bartolome, North Seymour, Santa Fe, or Pinzon. Families who want a relaxed option can visit the Santa Cruz highlands. They can see giant tortoises in their natural habitat. They can also enjoy a countryside lunch.

Day 8

Enjoy a final relaxation day at Tortuga Bay, Garrapatero Beach, or another favorite beach. Take time to unwind as a family and prepare for departure the next day.

Day 9

Depart from Baltra Airport. The journey from Puerto Ayora takes about two hours. It includes a taxi ride, a short ferry crossing, and a bus to the airport terminal.

Where to Stay in Galápagos with Toddlers for Comfort and Safety

  • When choosing accommodation in the Galapagos with infants and toddlers, pick places with spacious rooms and comfortable common areas. Many island hotels have compact layouts, and limited space can make young children restless. This can add extra stress to the trip.
  • Family-owned hotels are often a great option. They offer a warm, welcoming atmosphere and attentive service. This helps families feel at home.
  • A swimming pool can be a valuable feature. It offers a safe and fun space for toddlers to play and relax. They can enjoy it after breakfast or in the late afternoon.

Travel to Galapagos with Toddlers: FAQs

Is the Galapagos safe for toddlers?

Yes. The Galapagos is one of the safest destinations in Latin America. Guided excursions, controlled visitor sites, and calm island towns make it ideal for families. We design flexible itineraries with downtime and safe wildlife distances for young children.

Toddlers can enjoy beach time, short nature walks, boat rides, giant tortoise visits, and snorkeling in shallow, calm waters with supervision. We prioritize gentle activities that balance wildlife encounters with rest and comfort.

Do toddlers need to pay Galapagos National Park fees?

Children under two usually enter the Galapagos National Park for free. Fees for older children are reduced compared to adults. We provide clear guidance on current regulations so families can plan confidently.

What is the best way to explore the Galapagos with toddlers?

Land-based island hopping is often the best option. It allows flexible schedules, family-friendly hotels, and shorter excursions. We tailor each trip to your child’s age, energy level, and comfort needs.
