can you visit the galapagos islands

The Galápagos Islands are a dream travel destination for wildlife lovers and anyone interested in natural history. They also have a reputation for being quite expensive to visit. After all, there are no direct international flights to this archipelago off the coast of Ecuador, and once there, you need to take a boat or light aircraft to explore the islands. Most travelers opt to do this via a multi-day cruise, which, generally speaking, isn’t cheap.

That said, making your Galápagos dream vacation a reality doesn’t mean you have to break the bank. To save money, you can opt for land-based travel or a shorter cruise. This ensures you save a little money while not skimping on any of the unforgettable adventures the Galápagos has to offer. Below, you’ll find even more detailed info on how to plan your ultimate Galápagos trip on a limited budget.

The Cheapest Time to Travel to the Galápagos

In the Galápagos, the high tourist season runs from mid-December to mid-January, coinciding with the holiday season. If you’re looking for a more peaceful and budget-friendly visit, the quieter, shoulder season months like May, September, and November are ideal. You can expect excellent weather, calm ocean conditions, and fewer crowds.

In contrast, the summer months see the influence of cool, nutrient-rich ocean currents coming up from Antarctica, like the Humboldt Current. This period is an excellent time for hiking and observing active marine life, even though it may not be ideal for underwater exploration due to the cooler, choppier seas. Prices are also higher during the summer months of June, July, and August, so you’ll have to factor that into your budget.

Where to Stay in the Galápagos on a Budget

When planning a budget Galápagos adventure, one of the key considerations is the type of lodging. Generally speaking, there are two options:

Galápagos Cruise

The most expensive lodging option in the Galápagos is spending a few days on a cruise ship. However, a cruise is also the most convenient and well-organized way to explore the islands. Typically, the multi-day cruise packages include all meals, with onboard accommodations like A/C, en suite baths, and hot showers. There are various options catering to diverse budgets and interests, from dive tours to wildlife-focused cruises.

It’s worth noting that cruise options vary in terms of the class of ship, trip duration, and types of itineraries. Prices fluctuate depending on the time of year; typically, higher seasons correspond to higher prices. Expect to pay roughly $1,500–$2,500 USD per person for a 4–5 day budget trip, while luxury 7–8 day cruises typically start around $5,000 and can exceed $10,000+ USD per person.

Island Hopping

Alternatively, you can choose to base your stay on one or more of the Galápagos Islands and explore the archipelago on an island-hopping tour. This mode of travel, in which you overnight in local hotels and other accommodations, offers greater flexibility. It allows you to explore at your own pace, and you’ll typically be traveling between the islands via speedboat.

At a minimum, we recommend planning for a four-day trip, as this will allow you to visit at least two different islands. Depending on the duration of your stay, you can create a customized adventure, blending self-guided tours with pre-arranged activities and guided excursions. Land-based Island-hopping tours generally cost between $900–$1,500 USD per person for a 4–5 day budget trip (hostels, basic tours) and $3,500+ per person for high-end, week-long packages (luxury hotels, private tours).

If you’re still unsure about which option to choose, check out this more detailed comparison of Galápagos Island Hopping versus Galápagos cruises.

Last-Minute Galápagos Cruises on a Budget

If you’re set on a Galápagos cruise but are limited by a tight budget, consider a last-minute booking. These deals are often game-changers, as cruise operators scramble to fill empty cabins 1-4 weeks before departure. Discounts can be as high as 25% or even 50% of standard prices, but the tradeoff is that you need to be flexible with your travel dates. At Rebecca Adventure Travel, you can find plenty of discounts and deals on Galápagos trips, some of which are even announced a few months before departure.

Galápagos Activities on a Budget

A Galápagos Islands trip is all about the activities, and there are many on offer here. Whether you’re a laid-back beach bum, curious nature enthusiast, or an active adventurer (or a combination of all three), the Galápagos caters to all. You’ll have your pick of tours, excursions, and day trips on both land and sea. None of these need to cost an arm and a leg, and many of the best experiences are free. Here’s a list of popular destinations/activities on the main islands:

Santa Cruz Island

Santa Cruz is the most populous island in the Galápagos, offering a wide range of accommodations, dining options, and attractions. Here are some spots not to miss.

Tortuga Bay

A 50-minute walk from downtown Puerto Ayora, Tortuga Bay greets you with powdery white sands and turquoise waters. Here, iguanas bask in the sun along with colonies of friendly sea lions. The beach is free, and you can access it from Puerto Ayora via a marked trail. Or, you can take a water taxi (15-20 minutes) for $25-$30. Snorkeling is popular here, as the waters abound with tropical fish and sea turtles. If you don’t have your own equipment, you can rent a mask and fins for around $5-15 per day.

El Garrapatero

Just a 30-minute drive from the main town of Puerto Ayora, El Garrapatero is a less crowded alternative to Tortuga Bay. Another free public beach, it also features clear waters and white sands. There are also mangrove forests and lagoons home to flamingos, blue-footed boobies, and other endemic birds. The water is perfect for spotting marine iguanas, sea turtles, rays, and colorful reef fish.

Las Bachas

This windswept stretch of coast on the island’s north side is a primary nesting site for sea turtles (peak breeding season is from December to May). Behind it are two small ponds inhabited by flamingos and other bird species, making this a top spot on Santa Cruz for wildlife/beach lovers. It’s a free public access site, though its location far from Puerto Ayora means most people visit on an organized day tour.

Charles Darwin Research Station

This renowned scientific, conservation, and educational facility in Puerto Ayora is a must-visit. The best part is that many areas of the research center are free, including the main visitor center, exhibition hall, and walking trails around the campus. Also, the famous Breeding Center, where visitors can see giant tortoise hatchlings and adults, costs a mere $10 per person.

Isabela Island

Isabela is the largest Galápagos island and exudes a relaxed, boho-chic ambiance. Here, there are plenty of acitivites you can enjoy on a budget, many of which involve sun and sand. Top sites include:

Playa Puerto Villamil

This wide and inviting beach on Isabela fronts the island’s main town of Puerto Villamil stretches 1.8 miles (2.9 km). It’s a great spot for a long (ideally romantic) walk, particularly because it won’t cost you a dime. While you stroll, you might encounter iguanas, flamingos, and various seabirds.

Concha de Perla

This turquoise lagoon is located on the coast right outside town. A wooden pathway (often occupied by lazy sea lions and iguanas) weaves through mangrove forests to a shallow bay, perfect for swimming. Concha de Perla is free to enter, and you can rent snorkeling equipment here for around $5 USD.

Isabela’s Wetlands

The wetlands of Isabela are another highlight that’s totally free to enjoy. Located near Puerto Villamil, this 2,154-acre (872 ha) protected area comprises mangrove forests, swamps, and lagoons. It’s a hub of biodiversity, home to flamingoes, herons, and other water birds, plus you can see iguanas and giant tortoises along the trails. A famous site here is the Wall of Tears, an unfinished lava-rock structure built in the 1940s by the forced labor of inmates back when the island was a penal colony.

Las Tintoreras

Just south of Concha de Perla, this enchanting islet is named after the harmless white-tip sharks, or tintoreras, that congregate here. The site comprises volcanic rock formations that create various channels and lagoons, making it a wildlife spectacle. The waters abound with sea turtles, sea lions, and marine iguanas, while penguins, Sally Lightfoot crabs, and blue-footed boobies occupy the rocks. You can only visit Las Tintereras on an organized tour, which costs between $40-90 per person and lasts about three hours.

San Cristóbal Island

San Cristóbal Island is home to the archipelago’s capital, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, which is the second most populous town in the archipelago. Lodging options and dining spots are plentiful, and visitor sites are easily reachable. Here are some beach highlights:

Playa Puerto Chino

A highlight of San Cristóbal Island, this beach doesn’t require a boat or cruise for access. The area is a nesting site for blue-footed boobies, and there’s a small cliff visitors can hike up to snap photos of the clear, azure waters. Playa Puerto Chino is typically less crowded during the week.

Mann Beach

Located near the Interpretation Center just north of town, Playa Mann is the most popular beach on the island. It’s an ideal spot to unwind alongside sea lions after a day of exploration as you watch the sun set over the horizon.

La Loberia

A 30-minute walk south of town, this rocky beach attracts plenty of sea lions. It’s also a great snorkeling spot, and sea turtles aren’t an uncommon sight. Consider hiring a cab for transportation to and from the beach, as it is not easily accessible by foot due to the lack of proper sidewalks.

Moreover, at $15-40 per day for a bicycle rental, it’s a great budget option. It’s best to start your day early, as most wildlife becomes less active by 5 PM. During your ride, you can visit highland farms where Galápagos tortoises roam freely.

Popular Spots for Adventure Activities

  • Las Grietas (The Cracks): For budget-friendly fun, consider visiting Las Grietas, a natural wonder comprising volcanic fissures that collect rainwater and seawater, creating a unique aquatic ecosystem. Due to its popularity, it’s recommended to go early to avoid the crowds. Once there, thrill-seekers can enjoy a bit of cliff-diving. Take into consideration that the hike there leads across patches of uneven terrain.
  • Kicker Rock: Known as León Dormido, this iconic rock formation rises dramatically from the Pacific Ocean. Located off the coast of San Cristóbal Island, the volcanic cone peeking out above the water conceals a world-class dive site below. The crystal-clear waters host an abundance of marine life, including sharks, rays, and schools of tropical fish. The challenging currents and diverse underwater topography make Kicker Rock a thrilling destination, but only for experienced divers.
  • Lava Tunnels: The lava tunnels in Santa Cruz, which were formed by ancient lava flows, make for a captivating subterranean experience. Equipped with proper gear, adventurers can navigate through the dark passages, marveling at the geological wonders and intricate rock formations.
