Ecuador’s State of Emergency: Curfew Lifting

Ecuador’s State of Emergency continues to improve, as security measures are reducing. The National Directorate of Information Analysis of the National Police assessed the movement restrictions to spot patterns and trends affecting the curfew, analyzing key elements within the operations of the Armed Forces and the Police. Their report suggested possible adjustments to curfew times by canton.

The government reduced Quito and Guayaquil‘s curfew by an hour, now starting at midnight. Similarly, curfews in many cities across different regions now begin at 2 a.m., shortened by three hours. Furthermore, authorities lifted the curfew entirely in multiple cities within twenty-two provinces, including Galápagos, Tungurahua (home to Baños), and Cotopaxi. Essential sectors previously exempt from restrictions, including tourism, continue to enjoy nationwide freedom of movement.

We are confident that more improvements will follow until we are completely back to normal. Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands remain safe destinations to visit, and Rebecca Adventure Travel remains steadfast in our commitment to guarantee our guests’ safety. Please keep sharing your travels with us using the #thisisecuador hashtag! We love seeing your adventures.

Ecuador’s State of Emergency Improving Rapidly

The Ecuadorian Ministry of Tourism released a new statement on the nation’s current situation. Following the enactment of the last two government decrees, the Armed Forces and Police have effectively reduced incidents across Ecuador, improving peace and security nationwide. The country has observed a noticeable decline in disturbances since January 10th, with successful operations supported by international allies and the Ecuadorian people.

With heightened security in certain areas and regular operations elsewhere, normality is steadily returning. Tourism in the Amazon and Galápagos Islands continues as usual, with no violent incidents reported. Cruise activities, air connectivity, hotels, and tourist services in these regions, as well as in Quito, are operating normally.

Ecuador’s airports, maritime ports, and roads are fully functional with reinforced security, ensuring traveler safety. The country’s infrastructure has faced minimal disruptions, and any affected flight schedules are now regular. Streets and roads are open, adhering to curfew hours from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., with security ensured by defense forces.

Quito’s International Airport, Quiport, reports full functionality, with personnel and travelers carrying out flights normally and on time. Outside terminals, the Armed Forces and Police are joined by the Metropolitan Public Company for Airport Services, the Metropolitan Transit Agency, and private security to uphold safety measures on all airport grounds. All abandoned objects are treated as suspicious, so travelers are advised to be mindful of their belongings. Those whose flights get canceled will not be allowed to enter the terminal, so it is advised to check flight status with the airline first.

Despite some unsettling media portrayals, Ecuador is working towards full normality. The country, known for its cultural richness, natural beauty, and warmth, remains a welcoming destination for tourists. The Ministry of Tourism encourages visitors to keep their travel plans and will continue to provide updates through its official channels.

We encourage you to share photos of your trip to Ecuador with the hashtag #thisisecuador.

Updates from Ecuador’s State of Emergency

In light of recent events, President Daniel Noboa declared a 60-day State of Emergency, aiming to maintain national security and foster an atmosphere of tranquility.

Rest assured that this measure will not disrupt your pre-planned travel arrangements. During the curfew, from 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., individuals with valid travel documentation can move freely. Essential employees in the tourism sector are exempt. This ensures the continuous operation of our services and, most importantly, a seamless travel experience for you.

Mobilization to and from airports is permitted, assuring smooth arrivals and departures. Both airports and maritime ports are operating normally, and roads and public transportation are fully functional, with only temporary adjustments during curfew hours.

Soldiers are patrolling key areas following the violent outbreak, providing an added layer of security. Despite the challenges, we emphasize that Ecuador’s natural and cultural wonders, including the Galápagos Islands, the Amazon Region, and National Parks, remain safe and enchanting destinations. No incidents have been recorded in these key tourist areas. The Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with law enforcement and government authorities, is actively addressing the situation, working tirelessly to guarantee that travel in Ecuador remains as enriching and safe as always.

To close out, we would like to share a message from our founder, Rebecca Braak: “The tourist places are safe, and in Galapagos, you don’t even feel the tension. Dry Season in Cuyabeno

As the Amazon rainforest is currently experiencing the dry season, the scarcity of rainfall has led to a reduction in the flow of rivers. These unique conditions have necessitated adjustments to travel itineraries, particularly in Cuyabeno. Swimming and aquatic activities, such as canoeing, will be primarily focused on areas with a more abundant water supply, or replaced by other on-land activities that might be more favorable due to these weather conditions.

Nevertheless, in spite of these challenges, the dry season also presents exciting new opportunities:

  • More Anaconda Sightings: The lower water levels make it more likely to spot elusive Anacondas, as they tend to congregate near the remaining water sources, offering a thrilling wildlife encounter.
  • Increased Monkey Sightings: With the changing landscape and easier navigation, the dry season enhances the likelihood of encountering various monkey species swinging through the treetops, providing memorable wildlife encounters.
  • Enhanced Accessibility: The dry season opens up access to parts of the Amazon that are typically harder to reach during the wet season, allowing visitors to explore and appreciate the diverse ecosystem more comprehensively.

In summary, despite the adjustments made to itineraries due to the dry season’s unique conditions, visitors to Cuyabeno during this time can look forward to an increased likelihood of encountering Anacondas, monkeys, and gaining access to otherwise challenging parts of the Amazon, making it an enticing and rewarding time to explore this remarkable rainforest reserve.

Mariscal Sucre International Airport status due to current the protests

The Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE) is currently on strike, therefore you might experience some road blockages, those include roads that lead to the airport. However, Quito, Guayaquil, and the Galapagos Islands airports remain open with just a small percentage of canceled or delayed flights.

Some recommendations are:

  • Avoid crowds.
  • Be aware of updates on road closures.
  • When going to the airport consider going with extra time in case you may encounter a roadblock.
  • Consider alternate routes.
  • Staying at hotels near the airport.
  • Finally, Rebecca Adventure Travel recommends to all its guests to go to the airport in the early morning, starting from 4 am. Why? Because curfew ends at 5 am, this way you will be on the road before the strikes resume. This measure will ensure a much more smooth sailing journey to the airport. Don’t forget to bring your printed boarding pass so you can circulate at this time.

The data shows a clear growing trend for the Ecuadorian tourism industry, which is steepening towards the second half of 2021. This also shows a solid base for the results of 2022.

“Tourism is the vehicle for conservation and development”, said the Tourism Minister, Niels Olsen, emphasizing that within the 2025 Tourism Plan, the vision of tourism will be presented, with clear policies of sustainability.

Working together with all the actors in the sector will allow rapid progress towards a complete reactivation of tourism in Ecuador.

The Galapagos is Ecuador’s first province that is free of COVID-19 after a rigorous and successful vaccination campaign. According to the latest data from December 2021, the archipelago has vaccinated 92,65% of its population.

Consequently, and as stated by the Viceprecidency of Ecuador, Galapagos, a World Heritage Site, was the first fully immunized archipelago in Latin America. This was of paramount importance to the island’s sustainability as they were officially the first Ecuadorian province to complete phase 1 of the vaccination campaign.
