Bay Tour Santa Cruz

In April, a member of the Rebecca Adventure Travel team went to the Galapagos Islands and visited Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz is filled with picturesque landscapes, wildlife, and beautiful beaches. You will learn more about the best places to visit in Santa Cruz, such as, Playa de los Perros, Punta Camaño Islet, and Las Grietas.

1. Playa de los Perros

The first stop of the bay tour of Santa Cruz in the Galapagos was at a small island in front of the coast. The Galapagos Archipelago consists of 19 islands, all located in the Pacific Ocean, and varying in size and potential activities.

After crossing this island, we arrived at Playa de Los Perros or Beach of the Dogs. This beach was named like this because of the numerous dog crabs that were found in the area. Galapagos is home to some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches, and definitely worth a visit.

This is a small beach and you can find plenty of iguanas and sally lightfoot crabs. The iguanas tend to just relax on the rocks and soak in the sun. On the way back to the boat you will pass through Canal del Amor which is a beautiful canal between 2 cliffs with turquoise water. Many people believe that in this canal love feels like magic.

TIP: Wear some sandals or good shoes as you will have to walk on the lava rocks.

2. Punta Camaño Islet

After the walking part of the tour, we went back to the boat to go snorkeling on the other side of the island. Punta Camaño is known for its beautiful reeves, and the big opportunity to experience a wide variety of colorful fish and sea lions.

The water had a nice temperature, and we were able to see some animals underwater! We spotted 2 turtles, one small ray, and a few fish, and if you are lucky, you will also be able to spot sea lions.

This activity took around 30 minutes. It was not mandatory to go in the water as you could also stay on the boat while the others snorkel. Once back on the boat, we were provided some snacks like biscuits, bananas, and drinks. In the islands of the Galapagos, you will find some of the best food, made with freshly caught fish

3. Las Grietas

This is a beautiful crack in between 2 cliffs where you can swim in crystal clear water. Las Grietas is a very beautiful spot and with its clear blue water, surrounded by cliffs, also very picturesque.

It takes about 5 minutes to walk from where the boat drops you off. When arriving at Las Grietas, you will find a wooden stair that brings you to the crack, from where you can jump into the water

Local people jump from the various heights off the cliff but that is not recommended. Underwater there is not much to see, but it is a beautiful place regardless. Once the sun goes away from the water, it can be very cold. Also, it is recommended to leave Las Grietas before sunset as the walking trail has no lightning.

TIP: If you can choose the time to go to this place, go early, around 6 AM, to have the whole clove to yourself!

Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz is the second-largest island of the Galapagos Archipelago. The most developed and largest town in the Galapagos is to find in Santa Cruz: Puerto Ayora. Puerto Ayora is considered to be the tourist hub of the archipelago. It is known for the Charles Darwin Research Station, where the breeding program for the endangered giant tortoises is located. The island is also known for its beautiful beaches and a nice lively town, with restaurants, bars, shops, and more.

There are many things to experience while in Santa Cruz. For example the Rancho Primicias, a privately owned ranch, where you can see dozens of giant tortoises, walking around in the grass.

You can also visit Tortuga Bay, a beautiful white sandy beach, Lagunas Las Ninfas, and Playa de la Estacion.  The possibilities are many. For more inspiration, take a look at this self-guided blog on Santa Cruz.
